Peaches HotHouse: Order Extra Hot, Sign the Waiver in Your Head

Every neighborhood needs a dare, and Bed-Stuy’s is served on a plate: fried chicken at the Extra Hot level of Peaches HotHouse, chased with a rum-heavy Brownstone Punch. This compact juke-joint of a restaurant was scorching New York with Nashville-style heat years before hot chicken became a national craze.

The Concept

Chefs Craig Samuel and Ben Grossman opened HotHouse in 2010 as the fiery sibling in their Peaches restaurant family, one of Brooklyn’s defining Black-owned hospitality groups. Samuel researched the dish in Nashville itself and has claimed credit for putting the phrase “Nashville-style hot chicken” on a New York menu — either way, this was the borough’s original burn.

What to Order

The fried chicken comes in three tiers — Regular, Hot and Extra Hot — and the top level is a genuine endurance event. The same treatment hits fried shrimp and catfish. A menu item literally named The Best Chicken Sandwich Anywhere backs up its confidence, and fried green tomatoes open the meal right. Cool the fire with stone-ground grits, mac and cheese, red-and-white slaw and cornbread, plus a mason-jar cocktail or the three-rum Brownstone Punch.

The Space

Time Out once described it as a tiny backwoods juke joint dropped into Bed-Stuy: wooden floors, tight tables, bar stools and zero pretension. A recent renovation moved the bar to open up more seats — a mercy for the famous weekend lines.

Who It’s For

Heat chasers, friends turning dinner into a challenge, and anyone who wants Southern cooking with a Brooklyn accent instead of a theme-park drawl. Weekday happy hour makes it a sneaky after-work move too.

Good to Know

How hot is Extra Hot really? Legitimately punishing — order Hot if you want flavor with a kick, Extra Hot only if you mean it.

Is there a happy hour? Yes, weekday early evenings — drinks plus the full menu of sides make it worth timing.

Can vegetarians eat here? Yes — marked veggie sides like grilled broccoli, grits, mac and cheese, slaw and cornbread stack into a real meal.

Do they take reservations? The restaurant group accepts bookings through its site, though walk-ins remain the weekend norm — expect a wait at peak times.

Can I get it delivered? Yes, online ordering covers takeout and delivery, and the group also runs catering and private events.

The food was delicious. It's a small, cosy place with outdoor seating. I ordered catfish with a salad and cornbread. My daughter ordered the cabbage. I don't like fresh garlic in cabbage, but everything else was good.

Went there with my sister, and it was exactly the soul food comfort I needed. Trust me, it does the job. I ordered the hot honey chicken sandwich à la Mike: the chicken was fried perfectly, the bun was perfect, and the l…

I decided to celebrate my birthday at Peaches on Tompkins on Juneteenth, expecting a welcoming atmosphere and real Southern food. Instead I was met with mediocre dishes and rude remarks from a manager who single-handedly…
