And it all started with the “great silent” and continued until the American cinema decided to focus on Hollywood. There is even an opinion that people from all over the world have filmed almost every square centimeter of Brooklyn since the 1800s.

The pioneering English immigrants J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith are partly to blame. They created The Vitagraph Studios in 1905 on the corner of East 15th Street and Avenue M. Vitagraph was the first studio to film Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty. Moreover, the filmmakers even set fire to the studio’s stables, which contained live horses for authenticity, for a key scene in the movie. Moreover, its glorious history began with its opening in 1883. The Brooklyn Bridge immediately became an unconditional symbol of the then-city of Brooklyn. People here believe that there is nothing like the original Brooklyn Bridge in the world.

After all, the bridge not only symbolizes struggle. As an artificial structure, it fulfills an important need for New Yorkers, but at the same time it is incredibly beautiful.

In general, the Brooklyn Bridge is very New York, very American, and it is no coincidence that it is the pearl of the borough for its residents. And if the Brooklynites can be understood, because “every frog praises its own swamp,” then why do residents of other neighborhoods, cities, and countries have so much respect for the structure. And here we come to its role in cinema.

After all, it is known that in one way or another, the Brooklyn Bridge has become the hero of more than a dozen films. Some of them were filmed back in the 1940s. These are films like On the Town, and It Happened in Brooklyn, and many others. In the twenty-first century, filmmakers also do not forget about the Brooklyn landmark, with the release of the movie Come On, Come On, Come On in 2021.

The acting role of the Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge does not have a specific actor’s role. It can be admired, it can be a place of excitement, or absolute uncertainty. At some point, it becomes a center of stunning “action,” with chases going on the bridge, like in the movies Godzilla, The French Connection, or Fantastic Four.

There have been extreme roles when the Brooklyn Bridge was even “destroyed,” in quotation marks, of course.<br /> Everyone remembers watching millions of people traveling back and forth until it was interrupted by massive destruction. The filmmakers of The Day After Tomorrow, Deep Impact, and Cloverfield conjured up such images for the Brooklyn Bridge. But when this happens, even in movies, it means that not only the bridge itself, Brooklyn or New York, has suffered, but a part of America has suffered.

Nowadays, the image of the destroyed Brooklyn Bridge is also exploited. For example, it happened in the movie I Am Legend, which was released in 2007. Back then, Will Smith and his dog were beating up mutants all over the city. In Spider-Man 2, the hero Peter wants to save Mary Jane. Where he does it is, of course, on the Brooklyn Bridge, thank God, without destroying it.

The struggle between good and evil on such an exquisite bridge as the Brooklyn Bridge is a fairly common plot point in movies. But it is not the only one. Directors and producers like to shoot romantic scenes here. To prove this point, it is enough to recall such films as Bewitched with Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey, Ang Lee’s Wedding Feast and Sex and the City: The Movie”. Miranda and Steve meet on the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s a really important moment and another amazing example of the energy of the borough.

Aside from the Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island is probably the most famous location in Brooklyn, and as such, it has been featured in many of the most successful films of all time. Some of the earliest films of The Vitagraph era in the early 1900s were shot on Coney Island.

Coney Island

From the tumultuous early twentieth century to the more family-friendly 1930s and 1950s, the racial problems of post-World War II America, when the so-called “white flight” took place, and millions of white New Yorkers began to leave Brooklyn for the suburbs. Up until the 1970s, Coney Island has always spoken to the United States and its people through the language of cinema.

So it is not surprising that another Brooklyn neighborhood that is very well known for cinema is Coney Island. Its participation in the cult and one of the most famous films of the late 1970s, The Warriors, is just one example. Walter Hill, who directed the movie, knows his stuff. The “Warriors” in the movie are the name of a gang that “lives” on Coney Island. These bad guys have, to put it mildly, misunderstandings with other gangs, such as the Riff Raff and the Baseball Furies. “The Warriors are accused of killing a gang leader from New York.

That’s about the movie in a nutshell, but in our case, the most interesting thing is that the movie has a lot of shots of the Coney Island waterfront, showing the local dilapidated streets. Also, the main, iconic scene from the movie, when actor David Patrick Kelly shouts on the beach, calling his men: “Warriors! Come out and fight!” was also filmed here in Coney Island.

Moreover, Coney Island is not known for its beach alone. In addition to the iconic swimming spot and the local promenade, the Cyclone wooden roller coaster has been repeatedly spotted in various films. In the movie The Wizard, the main character Dorothy, played by the lovely Diana Ross, on her way to Oz, meets the Scarecrow, played by Michael Jackson, right next to this legendary ride.

You can also remember the famous director Woody Allen, whose family lived nearby. He used this place to shoot his movie Annie Hall. So, the Cyclone ride was filmed there in one of the roles. In the movie, Alvy Singer lived in a former hotel that was located under the roller coaster.

Woody Allen lived here for a reason, for a while. In 2017, he made another movie featuring Coney Island, or rather, one of its attractions. We’re talking about “Wheel of Wonders,” a movie that, by the way, has the same name and was a hit movie for its time. In addition, the local “Wheel of Wonders” serves as the backdrop for the duel between Peter Parker and the Vulture in another episode of “Spider-Man: Homecoming”. And one can write about such films for a very long time.

A star of world cinema

It’s hard to say how much it’s connected, but Woody Allen, Noah Baumbach, Didi Cohn and Wentworth Miller all went to Midwood High School, one of the most famous neighborhoods in Brooklyn. What’s more, the school where they studied also met in the movies. It was at this school that the talent competition in the movie The Squid and the Whale, which was released in 2005, took place.

And the 1996 movie “The First Wives Club,” which starred such movie stars as Diane Keaton and Sarah Jessica Parker, takes place, where you might think, at Brooklyn College, or, as you can see in the movie, at Middlebury College. And in the movie Malcolm X, Denzel Washington, as the main character of the movie, appears in one of the scenes on East 19th Street.

Nowadays, many people say that such a popularity of Brooklyn landscapes in cinema is due to the fact that the local film company The Vitagraph once did a great job. Perhaps it is true, but it does not change the fact that Brooklyn is a star of world cinema.

Sources:

https://www.untappedcities.com/brooklyn-film-locations/

https://www.bkmag.com/2022/10/21/filmed-in-brooklyn/

https://academics.winona.edu/povwinona/brooklyn-2015-home-is-where-your-heart-is

Brooklyn’s contribution to the development of American cinema is, without exaggeration, enormous.
